The Science behind Tired Eyes

The skin around the eyes is the thinnest in the body. It is therefore usually the first area to show signs of inevitable and multifactorial ageing. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and strength due to the decreased production of elastin and collagen, resulting in the development of excess eyelid skin. Key components such as hyaluronic acid, responsible for keeping skin well hydrated for a youthful appearance, also reduce, causing dryness, wrinkling and volume depletion. There is also a decrease in the amount of subcutaneous fat in the face due to atrophy, along with changes in the facial skeleton and teeth. Fine lines and wrinkles develop (crow's feet), with gravity resulting in increased folds and sagging of the skin, with characteristic hollowing or protrusion of fat under the eyelid skin. All of these factors result in a more aged appearance that requires skin surface revitalization, uplifting and restoration of definition if the characteristics of youth are to be restored.

How can Tired Eyes be treated?

The appearance of tired eyes can be improve with:

  • Good skincare, with appropriate cosmeceuticals for the eye region, to counteract the process of ageing

  • Regular local massage to aid lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness

  • Botulinum toxin injections, which can be used to diminish crow's feet and lower eyelid wrinkles

  • Fillers, which can be used to correct lower lid hollowing and deeper lines

Things to consider…

Botulinum toxin injections can be slightly painful and lead to mild bruising. We will advise you on how to minimize the risks, but it is worth bearing this in mind when planning the right time to have your treatment.

Other very rare complications are :

  • Drooping of the eyelids

  • Mild headache or sensation of heavy headedness

  • Allergic reaction

As with all treatments, Fillers can have side effects, which include bruising, tenderness, redness and swelling. Again, we will advise you on how to minimize the risks, but it is worth bearing this in mind when planning the right time to have your treatment.

Other very rare complications are :

  • allergic and granulomatous reactions

  • local infection or worsening of acne

All treatments have recognised side effects which cannot be prevented, but we are fully trained to recognise and treat any additional issues early and safely.
