What are Lip Issues?

The lips, and the contours around the mouth, (the peri-oral region) lose definition as we age. The signs of ageing of the lips and mouth that typically occur include:

  • Thinning and decreased fullness of the upper / lower lips

  • Thin lines and wrinkles extending from the upper / lower lips

  • Down-turning of the corners of the mouth

  • Appearance of wrinkles / lines down from the corners of the mouth to the chin – the 'Marionette' lines

  • Sagging and loss of definition of the chin and jaw-line

Your skin and your health is our priority.

The Science behind Lip Issues

Facial ageing is inevitable and has multiple causes. As we age, our skin loses elasticity and strength due to the decreased production of elastin and collagen. Key components such as hyaluronic acid, responsible for keeping skin well hydrated for a youthful appearance, also reduce, causing dryness, wrinkling and volume depletion. There is also a decrease in the amount of subcutaneous fat in the face due to atrophy, along with changes in the facial skeleton and teeth. Fine lines and wrinkles develop, with gravity resulting in increased folds and sagging of the skin. All of these factors result in a more aged appearance that requires skin surface revitalization, uplifting and restoration of definition if the characteristics of youth are to be restored.

How can these lip and perioral issues be treated?

  • Fillers can be used to:

    • restore lip fullness for subtle definition

    • smooth the vertical lines and wrinkles that occur periorally at the lip edges

    • add definition to the lip borders and counteract the downward drooping at the lip corners

    • restore volume and reduce the depth of 'Marionette' lines

    • redefine and restore the natural-looking contours of the chin and give a better-defined jaw-line

  • Peels can be used to improve fine peri-oral wrinking

Things to consider…

Our fillers do include numbing local anaesthetic, but we can also apply a local anaesthetic gel and injectable dental anaesthetic to reduce any pain and discomfort. As with all treatments, Fillers can have side effects, which include bruising, tenderness, redness and swelling. We will advise you on how to minimize the risks, but it is worth bearing this in mind when planning the right time to have your treatment.

Other very rare complications are :

  • allergic and granulomatous reactions

  • local infection or worsening of acne

  • reactivation of oral herpes (please tell us if you suffer from cold sores and we will advise you how to minimise the risk of a flare up)

Side effects cannot always be prevented but we are fully trained to recognise and treat any issues early and safely.
