What is Face Shaping?

Botox (botulinum toxin) can be used to treat the masseter (jaw) muscle associated with chewing and teeth grinding. The masseter muscle can become overworked and enlarged resulting in a wide or square jaw and often the cause of headaches. Injecting this area with botox, weakens the overworking muscle, reducing in size and therefore reshaping the face for a more softer, rounder jaw and making it less prominent.

The Science behind Botulinum Toxin
​
Botulinum toxin acts on the junction between nerves and muscle, blocking the transmission of nerve signals and paralysing the muscles supplied by those nerves. This reduces movements caused by the muscles and therefore fine wrinkles caused by the movements are reduced. The effect on muscles and fine lines / wrinkles starts 2-4 days after injections and reaches a maximum effect at 7-10 days. The effect usually lasts for 3 – 4 months.

Botulinum toxin also acts on the small nerves stimulating the sweat glands, so blocking these nerves reduces sweating. The effect on the sweat glands starts 2-4 days after injection, reaching full effect at 7-10 days and usually last for 5-6 months.

Things to consider…

Botulinum toxin injections can be slightly painful and lead to mild bruising. We will advise you on how to minimize the risks, but it is worth bearing this in mind when planning the right time to have your treatment.
