Sweating

What is Sweating?

Sweating is normal – it is one of the ways our body regulates temperature to avoid over-heating. However, sweating can be excessive, termed hyperhidrosis, with the body producing a far greater than necessary amount of sweat. This can cause significant day-to-day distress and embarrassment for patients, both at work and socially.

The Science behind Sweating

Excessive sweating is caused by overactivity of the eccrine sweat glands. This over-activity is linked to the sympathetic nervous system which regulates many important functions of the body. Eccrine glands are found virtually all over the body but are particularly concentrated in the armpits (axillae) and groin. The affected areas are often constantly damp and visible in certain clothing. There are many factors associated with excessive sweating – exercise, heat or cold, alcohol or caffeine, spicy food, smoking, stress, anxiety and strong emotions. Hyperhidrosis can also be due to medical conditions, including diabetes and thyroid gland over-activity. It is important to rule these medical causes out in the first instance, as treatment of the underlying cause will often resolve the excessive sweating. However, in some people, there is no treatable trigger and the condition significantly affects their quality of life unless treated appropriately.

How can excessive sweating be treated?

Lifestyle changes – using strong anti-perspirants, avoiding triggers such as spicy food or alcohol and wearing cool, loose clothing – can be helpful.

However, often these changes are not enough. Botulinum Toxin injections into the areas of excessive sweating can be very effective but will need to be repeated approximately every 6 months to maintain the effects.

Things to consider…

Botulinum toxin for hyperhidrosis can take up to a week to gain maximum efficiency. The treatment lasts between 3 and 6 months time.
