Peels

What are Peels?

Chemical Peels are a chemical solution applied to the skin in order to improve the surface appearance. The peel lifts the dead skin cells away leaving smoother less damaged skin underneath. Younger skin has even skin tone, reflects light to appear radiant and has minimal wrinkles – peels act to address all of these issues. There are different types of peels available depending on what issues you wish to treat and your skin type.

How are they used medically?

Chemical Peels are used to reduce and treat :

  • Photo-ageing and fine wrinkles

  • Pigmentation disturbances including melasma

  • Superficial scarring

  • Acne vulgaris

  • Rosacea and Milia

The Science behind Peels

Peels result removal of various layers of the skin (depending on the peel type and how long they are left on the skin surface), allowing regeneration of new epidermal and dermal layers which are smoother and less damaged. The various agents used are classified according to the depth of the layers of skin they act on.

There are superficial peels, medium depth peels and deep peels:

SUPERFICIAL PEELS

Superficial peels are suitable for treating conditions mainly arising within the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) such as mild photo-ageing, mild acne, actinic keratoses and melasma. It may be necessary to carry out several superficial peels to produce a satisfactory result in some of these conditions and a superficial peel is not suitable for acne scarring or deeper age-related damage.

At Centre Of Dental Excellence, we use Skinceutical and Obagi peels:

  • The Skinceutical peel is very light and more of a brightening exfoliative treatment: it works immediately and you can expect to go out that evening glowing with tighter, fresher skin

  • The Obagi Radiance Peel is light but slightly deeper, taking a week to recover from its peeling effect

MEDIUM AND DEEP PEELS

Medium and deep peels are suitable for deeper lines and wrinkles or for deeper acne scarring-stanmore. These penetrate and act on the dermis – the deeper layer of the skin.

At Centre Of Dental Excellence, we use the Obagi Blue peel, a TCA – Trichloroacetic Acid – peel. The peel can be modified for medium or deep peeling. Your skin will take undergo redness and significant peeling, taking 4-8 weeks to fully recover. This "downtime" should be taken into account when choosing the best time to have the treatment

Things to consider…

Sometimes, to achieve the best outcome from a peel, we will need to start you on a preparatory skin treatment prior to doing the peel (for the deeper peels). This pre-treatment is key to preventing complications, improving skin healing and optimising the effects of the peel.

For the deeper peels, it is normal for your skin to be very red and flaky for a couple of weeks after the treatment. Therefore we strongly recommend you only have a peel when you have plenty of down time for your skin to recover and nothing important e.g. a wedding planned.

As with all treatments, peels can have side effects including:

  • persistent redness

  • hyper or hypo-pigmentation

  • scarring

  • re-activation of herpes simplex (if you suffer from coldsores, please let us know so we can minimise the risk of this)

Having successfully undertaken a peel, your skin will remain more sensitive to sunlight and the only way to maintain the positive effects of a peel is to protect yourself from the sun by using a factor 50 SPF sunscreen daily.

Side effects cannot always be prevented but we are fully trained to recognise and treat any issues early and safely.
